Madi is a well known basketball player. Let me change that up a little, Madi is well known by college coaches, national scouts/recruiters/media and individuals in the basketball community for the hard work she has put into becoming a basketball player AND she is only a 5th grader. Madi is well known because of the effort she, along with her parents, put into documenting her progress through social media specifically Facebook. I’ve talked about her before.
I don’t know how Madi figured it out.. I don’t know if her parents told her or her coach told her or she read it in a book or online. But Madi figured out one of the main secrets to success. The secret is to…………
KNOW WHERE YOU WANT TO GO
It’s Stephen R. Covey’s second habit of his 7 Habits of Highly Effective People — Begin with the End in Mind. “To begin with the end in mind means to start with a clear understanding of your destination.”
Right now at this very moment YOU ARE HERE. You know those maps you use at the mall. Right were you are standing is a big red dot with those words. YOU ARE HERE. You know where you are. You see where you are. You know your current situation. You should have your stats from last season. You should be aware of how you played or trained during the spring, summer or fall. So where do you want to go from here. Where would you like to move the big red dot to?
Where you are moving the big red dot to is your destination, your end point, or simply your goal? If you were hungry, the big red dot might be a Mcdonalds or Burger King. If you need a phone, the big red dot might be an IPhone or a Samsung? If you needed a new pair of basketball shoes, the big red dot would be a pair of Nikes, Adidas or Under Armour.
In basketball, what do you want the big red dot to be for you this season? Is it an increase in points, rebounds, steals or assists? Is it to be a starter? Is it to be the best defender? Maybe you want to start getting recruited. Do you want to receive your first letter or 2 from a womens basketball program? Would you like to have a college coach attend one of your games?
Take some time and do as Madi did. Write out your basketball goals for this season. Document where you would like the big red dot to be once the season has ended.
Let’s get started:
