Emailing College Coaches

I’ve seen posts on social media about the Nike EYBL vs EYCL. The posts have been referencing which is better, financial package comparisons, and even comparisons in reference to the Under Armour setup.

I want to share my recruiting experience with the Nike, Adidas and Under Armour tournaments as a college coach.

Tournament Recruiting Assignments

Our head coach primarily attended the EYBL events at Boo Williams and Nike Nationals.

Depending on the amount of players we needed to evaluate at a tournament, we may have 2 coaches at the same event. So when EYBL was in Louisville during Run 4 Roses, I attended and our head coach attended. She watched the EYBL games while I watched the Roses games. However, if she needed to watch a specific player in Roses, I would eval the EYBL game.

In my 5 years of coaching, I never attended Boo Williams nor Nike Nationals. I did attend the very first Under Armour event in Pennsylvania and other Under Armour tournaments after that.  I have also attended the Adidas events in many cities.

Divisions

As a coaching staff preparing for an evaluation tournament, we NEVER discussed if a player was playing in the Under Armour UAA or the Rise division. We NEVER discussed if a player was playing in the Adidas 3SSB or Gold division. We NEVER discussed if a player was playing on the main court or on the last court.

When we were preparing for an evaluation tournament, we needed to know what travel team a player was playing with and what evaluation tournament they would be playing at.

Quite frankly, we didn’t know if the player or team was playing in what division or on which court, until the tournament schedule came out. It wasn’t really something we were thinking about either.

Bottom Line

Many times, the coaches on our staff were assigned to attend specific tournaments because we had the most relationships with the players and teams playing at that event.

This leads back to– college coaches follow players and teams THEY KNOW ABOUT and need to get a new or another evaluation on.

That means when I attended an Under Armour or Adidas event. I attended the games of the players and teams I needed to evaluate regardless of the division the team was playing in.

EYCL

If you are on a team that’s a part of the EYCL, Congratulations!

Being in the EYCL means you get to play in the same locations the EYBL plays in. It also means that you will be at the same events many college coaches will be in attendance.

Take advantage of the opportunity by letting the college coaches in your state and region know that you will be playing in the EYCL events.

Activity

Some college team’s are heading into their Conference Tournament this week. Just like I said last week, teams’ seasons will start ending this week.

Use your list you created last week of college programs and college coaches to send them emails.

Here is what you should include in your emails. The more information you include the more helpful it is for college coaches to recruit you.

  1. In the email subject, put your Class, Position, Name and City and State you live in.

For example, 2025 Guard Patosha Jeffery Memphis, TN

  1. In the body of the email, include the following:

Name
Grade
Height
Position
Travel Team Name
Travel Team Jersey #
High School (City)
Season Stats
Season Accolades
Contact Info (Cell/Social Media)
GPA
High School Highlight Link
High School Jersey #
