Early Signing Period

When I was coaching at Southern Miss, people would ask me all the time “Did I miss home/ Memphis?”.  I would always say, “I don’t have time to miss home.”

I really did not have the time to miss home because, as a college coach, you are so consumed with doing the many tasks of your job.

To give you an example of how busy I was. Here is a typical evening for me during the basketball season:

5-6:30pm Arrive home to Shower & Eat
6:30-8:00pm Nap
8:00pm-12am Wake up, Make calls & Watch Film
12am-2am Nap
2am-4am Watch more Film
4-6am Nap
6am  Wake up, Cook breakfast, Prepare to go in office by 8:30am

When I would tell people my schedule, they could not believe it.

That was my evening schedule when I was home. That does not include my schedule while in the office, traveling for recruiting, traveling for games, game days, etc.

I wanted to share this with you so you got an understanding of why you must be proactive at communicating with college coaches, during the season.

If you reach out to a college coach and don’t get a response, don’t get discouraged. Reach out again.

If you miss a call with a college coach, text them back with a better time to call you.

If it seems you are always reaching out at the wrong time, ask when is the best time to talk or text.

Early Signing Period

November 8 – November 15 is the early signing period for Division 1 Basketball. This is when seniors sign their National Letters of Intent (NLI) to play at a school.

What is the NLI?

When you sign an NLI, you agree to attend the signing institution for one academic year in exchange for that institution awarding athletic financial aid for a minimum of one academic year.

Learn more about the NIL at http://www.nationalletter.org/index.html or @NLIinsider

NLI Activity

While we are in the early signing period, go visit the social media sites of women’s college basketball programs you are interested in attending. If you had a teammate or a friend that signed, visit that school’s social media.

Once a school receives the signed NLI agreement, they release a social media post about the signing of the player. Screenshot the post of the player’s signing. Print copies to put on your wall, locker, notebook, dream board or even as a background on your phone.

Look at it daily as encouragement to continue to work hard and extra on your dream of playing college basketball.
